Species composition and diversity of tree species were analysed in 10 respresentative forest sites occurring in Sagar District (Madhya Pradesh). As per values of IVI (Importance Value Index) six forest communities were identified. In general the forest vegetation of the district is either teak (Tectona grandis) dominating or teak associated. Species richness and species richness index ranged from 18 to 50 and 1.120 to 2.343 respectively. Shannon-Wiener diversity index ranged between 2.22-3.66 and Beta diversity ranged between 0.69-1.83. The values of concentration of dominance were generally low at all study sites indicating the dominance is shared by more than one and/or many species. Dominance-diversity curves showed log-normal distribution, also indicative of shared resources pattern by a number of species and mixed nature of vegetation. Keywords

Important wild and cultivated poisonous plants of Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh (India) were recorded during survey in deciduous forests and surrounding area of the district. Total number of 52 species belonging to 25 families were collected. Out of these, 32 Herbs, 14 shrubs and 06 trees were classified. These species are known to possess different toxic and poisonous properties used for various purposes like brain, cardiac, blood poisoning, etc. Toxic plant part, toxic principles, toxicity, local name, family and habit ofthese plants are described and discussed. Keywords

Species diversity and density of buried seed bank in top 10cm. (0-5 cm and 5-10cm) of soil were studied in two tropical dry deciduous forests in Central India. Two sites namely, Mainpani and Ramna were selected for present study. Samples were collected 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm in three seasons, viz. postmonsoon, winter and summer. Seeds of total 34 species were recovered from soil samples belonging to 17 species of trees, 4 of shrubs and 13 of herbs. Result showed that highest density in upper layer (0-5 cm) was that of Anogeissus pendula (800 m-2 ) under inter canopy area in winter season at Mainpani. Maximum densities in case of shrub and herb species was found to have been contributed by Lantana camara (175 m-2 ) under canopy and Cassia tora (850 m-2 ) under inter canopy during summer and winter sampling at Ramna. Keywords

The rural population use poisonous plants as an antidote of snake poison since long time. A preliminarily survey was conducted for poisonous plants used in snake bite problem in tropical dry deciduous forests of Sagar region and its environs in Central India. The paper includes a list of wild and cultivated poisonous plants common to this region which are hitherto not systematically reported. A total number of 15 species belonging to 13 families and 12 genera were collected. Out of these, eight herbs, one shrub and six tree species were classified. These plants are used traditionally as an indigenous medicine in snake bite problem, but these plants are harmful for humans and livestocks. Plant habit, chemical constituents, toxic part and use of snake antidotes have been described and discussed. Keywords
